Kolkata’s First AC Train Hits Tracks
Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division marked a milestone on Sunday as Union Ministers of State Sukanta Majumdar and Shantanu Thakur flagged off the region’s first air-conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train at Sealdah station. The inaugural run, a 76-km journey to Ranaghat in Nadia district, signals a leap in commuter comfort for West Bengal’s suburban rail network.
Majumdar, who joined the inaugural ride to Dumdum station, hailed the initiative as a step toward modernizing rail travel. “This AC train will redefine suburban commuting with its comfort and efficiency,” he said. The 12-coach train, fully air-conditioned with end-to-end vestibule connectivity, ensures a seamless and comfortable journey for passengers.
Commercial operations begin Monday, with the train servicing key stops including Bidhannagar, Dumdum, Sodepur, Khardah, Barrackpore, Naihati, Kanchrapara, Kalyani, and Chakdah. Eastern Railway officials noted that the AC coaches are equipped with advanced amenities, including ergonomic seating and improved ventilation, catering to the growing demand for premium suburban travel.
