EAM Jaishankar Meets Indonesian Counterpart Sugiono For Bilateral Discussions
India and Indonesia discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation.
India and Indonesia on Sunday discussed expanding cooperation across key sectors including defence, maritime trade, investment, pharmaceuticals and food security during wide-ranging talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono. The discussions took place during the eighth India-Indonesia Joint Commission meeting held in New Delhi.
Sugiono is currently on a three-day official visit to India, with both sides reviewing the progress of their comprehensive strategic partnership. India described Indonesia as a key partner in the Southeast Asian region, noting that bilateral relations have strengthened significantly in recent years, particularly in trade and investment.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar welcomed the Indonesian delegation and highlighted the importance of continued high-level engagement between the two countries. He also recalled the “fruitful” discussions held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during the latter’s visit to India, saying the visit had given new momentum to bilateral ties.

The two sides held detailed conversations covering the full spectrum of cooperation, including political and security issues, defence collaboration, maritime connectivity, trade and investment flows, as well as emerging areas such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals and food security. Both delegations reportedly emphasised the importance of strengthening resilient supply chains and enhancing regional stability.
Sugiono noted that President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India last year had helped chart a renewed direction for the partnership between New Delhi and Jakarta. He expressed optimism that continued dialogue would further deepen cooperation in areas of mutual strategic and economic interest.
India and Indonesia, both major maritime powers in the Indo-Pacific region, have steadily expanded their engagement across multiple domains in recent years. Sunday’s meeting reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the partnership and advancing collaboration in line with evolving regional and global priorities.
