Nepal Foreign Minister Calls For "Open-Heart" Talks With India to Settle Border Dispute
Nepal FM urges open dialogue with India to resolve the longstanding border dispute.
Nepal has expressed its willingness to resolve its long-standing border dispute with India through dialogue and diplomacy, with Nepalese Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal emphasizing the need for open and constructive engagement between the two neighboring countries. Speaking during a media interaction in New Delhi, Khanal said that no issue is too complex to be addressed when both sides approach discussions with sincerity and mutual understanding.
The remarks came a day after Khanal held wide-ranging talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his three-day visit to India. The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. However, it has also taken place against the backdrop of renewed debate over unresolved boundary issues between the two countries.
Addressing the border dispute, Khanal said the current government in Kathmandu does not view India through what he described as a “distorted” or overly sensitive geopolitical perspective. Instead, he stressed that Nepal's primary objective is to build a mutually beneficial partnership focused on economic growth, development, and regional prosperity. He added that the government favors a calm and data-driven approach rather than political rhetoric or hyper-nationalistic posturing.

Khanal further stated that Nepal seeks to engage with India transparently and with a clear focus on economic transformation. According to him, both countries stand to gain from stronger cooperation, particularly at a time when South Asia is experiencing significant economic and technological changes. He emphasized that maintaining a positive and practical relationship with India remains a key priority for Nepal's foreign policy.
The Nepalese foreign minister also praised India's economic progress, describing the country as a rapidly growing technological and economic powerhouse that has enhanced its standing on the global stage. He said Nepal sees opportunities in partnering with an India driven by innovation, investment, and development while presenting itself as a nation with growing aspirations and untapped potential.
Khanal's visit comes amid controversy surrounding recent comments by Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah regarding the border dispute. Despite the sensitivities surrounding the issue, Nepal's latest diplomatic outreach signals an effort to keep communication channels open and pursue peaceful solutions through dialogue. Both nations share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, making sustained engagement crucial for maintaining stability and cooperation in the region.
