DRDO Conducts Maiden Flight Test Of India's Kusha Long-Range Missile System

India tests indigenous long-range air defence missile

India on Thursday successfully conducted the maiden test of the indigenous Kusha long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) system, marking a major milestone in strengthening the country's air defence capabilities. The missile system, developed to counter aerial threats at distances ranging from 150 km to 350 km, successfully intercepted a simulated high-speed and high-altitude target during the test conducted off the Odisha coast, officials said. The test was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island, a key missile testing facility of India.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Kusha system was tested against an electronic target designed to replicate a challenging aerial threat scenario. The missile successfully tracked and neutralised the target, demonstrating the performance of its integrated weapon system components. Officials familiar with the development said the Kusha missile system is expected to be inducted into service within the next three to four years. Once deployed, the system will significantly enhance India's ability to detect, track and destroy hostile aerial threats from greater distances.

The capability is expected to complement existing air defence systems and provide the armed forces with a stronger shield against evolving security challenges. The Kusha system has been designed to counter a wide range of threats, including fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and large enemy aircraft. Its long engagement range allows it to provide protection against aerial attacks at considerable distances, improving the ability of India's defence forces to respond to potential threats before they reach critical areas.

The Ministry of Defence said all major elements of the weapon system, including missiles, radars and command-and-control systems, have been developed by various DRDO laboratories along with industry partners. The indigenous development of these components reflects India's broader push towards self-reliance in defence technology under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Modern warfare has increasingly highlighted the importance of advanced air defence networks capable of countering multiple types of threats, including precision-guided weapons, drones and long-range missiles.

Systems like Kusha are expected to play an important role in creating layered air defence capabilities by providing extended-range protection alongside other existing systems. The successful test comes at a time when countries around the world are investing heavily in advanced missile defence technologies amid changing security environments. For India, the development of a homegrown long-range surface-to-air missile system represents an important step towards reducing dependence on imported defence equipment and enhancing operational preparedness.

The DRDO and defence officials are expected to conduct further trials to evaluate different aspects of the Kusha system before its eventual induction into the armed forces. Additional testing will focus on validating performance under varied operational conditions and ensuring that all components work together effectively. Once fully deployed, the missile system is expected to become a key part of India's future air defence architecture.
