Barcelona Confirm Frenkie De Jong Suffered MCL Tear During FIFA World Cup

Frenkie De Jong faces knee ligament recovery after World Cup injury.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee, an injury sustained while representing the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup. The Spanish champions confirmed the diagnosis on Thursday, revealing that further medical examinations conducted after the midfielder's return from international duty showed the injury was more serious than initially believed. Despite the setback, the club said surgery is not currently required, with De Jong set to continue conservative treatment under the supervision of Barcelona's medical staff.

The Dutch international disclosed that the initial assessment by the Netherlands' medical team suggested the injury was minor and would not worsen if he continued playing. As a result, De Jong chose to remain available for his country despite experiencing pain. He explained that playing through discomfort was a decision he had made before in order to contribute to both club and country whenever possible.

De Jong featured in two group-stage matches during the World Cup before missing the Netherlands' third fixture, a 3-1 victory over Tunisia. He later returned for the Round of 32 clash against Morocco, playing 109 minutes before the Netherlands were eliminated in a penalty shootout. Following the tournament, Barcelona's medical staff conducted more detailed examinations, which revealed a tear in the medial collateral ligament of his right knee.

In a statement shared on social media, De Jong said he was relieved that surgery would not be necessary and expressed his determination to return to action as soon as possible. He added that his full focus is now on rehabilitation and recovery, while thanking supporters for their encouragement during the difficult period. Barcelona also confirmed that his progress will be closely monitored over the coming weeks before any decision is made regarding his return to competitive football.

The injury is a setback for Barcelona as the club prepares to begin the defence of its La Liga title. De Jong has established himself as one of the team's most influential midfielders, providing composure, ball progression, and tactical flexibility under pressure. His absence could force Barcelona to adjust its midfield plans during the opening weeks of the new domestic campaign.

Barcelona are scheduled to begin their La Liga title defence with an away fixture against Elche on August 23. The club has not provided a definitive timeline for De Jong's recovery, instead stating that his return will depend on his rehabilitation progress and regular medical evaluations. Fans and coaching staff will hope the conservative treatment allows the Dutch midfielder to return without complications later in the season.
