Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a stringent crackdown on criminal activity across the state following the high‑profile death of a retired Indian Army brigadier in Dehradun earlier this week, officials said. The move comes amid public outrage and increasing scrutiny of law and order after the senior military veteran was struck by a stray bullet during a violent altercation on a city street.
The victim, Brigadier (Retd) Mukesh Kumar Joshi, 74, was killed on March 30, 2026, while on his routine morning walk in the Rajpur area of Dehradun. Police believe the fatal bullet came from a firefight between two groups of men involved in a dispute between vehicles, which escalated into gunfire. The incident followed an earlier confrontation the previous night at a local nightclub, according to preliminary investigations.
The fatal shooting of Brigadier Joshi — a respected former Army officer with decades of service — has galvanized public and political reaction across Uttarakhand. Residents and ex‑servicemen expressed shock and dismay that a veteran could be killed by a stray bullet in broad daylight, sparking renewed debate over public safety and enforcement of criminal laws in the state capital.

In response, CM Dhami convened a high‑level meeting with senior police and administrative officials to review security measures and directed that there be “no compromise on law and order.” According to a government release, the chief minister emphasised that police and prosecution must act swiftly and decisively against individuals who disturb peace, and has ordered intensified patrols and stricter enforcement of public safety protocols.
Police have reportedly formed multiple teams to apprehend those involved in the shooting; several suspects have been arrested and others remain at large as investigations continue. Authorities have also suspended officers for alleged negligence related to the incident and are reviewing enforcement practices concerning night‑time violence and public disorder.
The government’s directive reflects growing concerns among citizens and officials about violent crime and public safety in Uttarakhand’s urban centres. Analysts say Dhami’s strict stance aims to reassure the public and deter future violent confrontations, especially as debates over gun safety, nightlife regulations and criminal accountability intensify following the brigadier’s death.
