Dense Fog Forces IndiGo to Cancel Flights Across North India Airports

IndiGo on Saturday issued an advisory alerting passengers that evening flights at Chandigarh Airport may be affected due to dense fog. The low-cost carrier stated that some flights scheduled later in the day were cancelled in advance to reduce passenger waiting times and ensure smoother operations.

Fog, a recurring winter hazard in northern India, can reduce visibility to under 50 meters, causing massive disruptions across airports such as Chandigarh, Delhi, and others. Earlier, IndiGo had also issued advisories for airports in Amritsar, Ranchi, Agartala, Bagdogra, and Hindon, where flight operations continue to be affected by lingering fog and chilly conditions.

This is not the first time IndiGo has faced such disruptions. Earlier this month, the airline cancelled over 1,600 flights in a single day, largely due to difficulties in implementing revised pilot rest norms. The DGCA reported that inadequate crew planning, training delays, and roster mismanagement contributed to cascading delays and cancellations across its network since late November 2025.

Northern India is currently experiencing intense cold, with Punjab and Haryana enveloped in dense fog. Ballowal Saunkhri in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar recorded the lowest temperature in Punjab at 4.4°C, while Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and other cities saw minimums ranging between 4.6°C and 7°C. Chandigarh recorded a low of 6.9°C.

IndiGo reassured passengers that its teams are closely monitoring conditions and remain available to assist travelers at all touchpoints. Authorities continue to advise passengers to check flight schedules in advance and prepare for potential delays as the fog persists across northern India.
