Delhi To See Thunderstorms And Light Rain As IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Delhi expected to see thunderstorms, rain and strong winds.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Saturday, warning residents of possible thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light rainfall as changing weather conditions continue to affect the National Capital Region. The alert comes amid the influence of a fresh western disturbance that is expected to bring increased atmospheric instability and intermittent weather activity throughout the day.
According to the IMD forecast, Delhi is likely to experience partly cloudy skies, with thunderstorms and thundersqualls developing during the afternoon or evening hours. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph in some areas, raising the possibility of sudden gusty conditions. The department has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during periods of intense wind activity and lightning.
The weather system is also expected to bring scattered light rain in isolated parts of the city, contributing to a noticeable dip in temperatures. The minimum temperature is likely to hover around 23 degrees Celsius, while the maximum may settle near 37 degrees Celsius. Despite daytime heat, intermittent cloud cover and rain are expected to provide temporary relief from rising temperatures.

The yellow alert follows a significant shift in Delhi’s weather pattern observed on Friday, when residents woke up to overcast skies and a comparatively cooler morning after overnight rainfall. The Safdarjung observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 22.8 degrees Celsius, which was notably below the seasonal average. This marked a sharp drop compared to earlier days when the city was experiencing intense heatwave conditions.
Meteorologists attribute the sudden weather change to a western disturbance affecting northwest India, which has introduced moisture-laden winds and unstable atmospheric conditions. Such systems are common during the pre-monsoon period and often lead to thunderstorms, dust storms, and short spells of rainfall across the region. Similar fluctuations have been observed across Delhi-NCR in recent days.
The IMD has indicated that the current weather pattern is expected to continue influencing conditions over the next few days, bringing relatively cooler temperatures and periodic rainfall. Authorities have urged residents to stay updated with official forecasts, as weather conditions may change rapidly due to ongoing atmospheric instability.
