Delhi Tests Earthquake and Chemical Disaster Readiness in Major Mock Drill

delhi-ncr conducts multi-agency disaster drill to prepare for earthquakes and industrial accidents.

A comprehensive multi-agency disaster management mock drill, dubbed 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra,' was conducted across 55 locations in Delhi on Friday morning to assess the region’s preparedness for earthquakes and industrial chemical hazards. The exercise, which simulated an earthquake followed by chemical leaks in industrial and transport zones, spanned all 11 districts of Delhi and extended to parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Coordinated by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Indian Army, and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, the drill involved personnel from fire services, police, and revenue departments. Key locations, including Ramesh Nagar Metro Station, Mother International School, and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, served as testing grounds for rescue and relief operations.

At Mother International School, participants practiced disconnecting gas and electricity lines post-earthquake and executed rescue drills. Similarly, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital simulated emergency responses for both earthquake and industrial accident scenarios. The exercise aimed to strengthen coordination and response mechanisms across agencies, ensuring Delhi-NCR is equipped to handle large-scale disasters effectively, according to a DDMA statement.
