Delhi-NCR Soaked: Red Alert for Heavy Rain

Monsoon deluge hits capital, triggers widespread weather warnings.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning as steady rainfall drenched the National Capital, Noida, and Gurugram, escalating from a yellow warning. The fresh downpours follow heavy rains earlier this week that disrupted flights and caused widespread waterlogging across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad.

The IMD’s 5:55 a.m. bulletin forecasted light to moderate rain across most of Delhi-NCR, with moderate to heavy showers at isolated spots over the next two to three hours. Visuals showed waterlogged streets and commuters navigating rain-soaked roads. The department also warned of thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas, compounding concerns after Tuesday’s travel disruptions.

The monsoon’s intensity extends beyond the capital. An orange alert was issued for northern Uttar Pradesh districts, including Bareilly, Lakhimpur, and Shahjahanpur, with heavy showers expected. Western Uttar Pradesh will likely see rain or thundershowers at most locations, while eastern areas may experience lighter rainfall. The IMD predicts a decrease in rainfall intensity starting August 15.

Nationwide, the monsoon has unleashed chaos, with extremely heavy rain forecast for isolated areas in Uttarakhand and heavy to very heavy showers in Himachal Pradesh and parts of Haryana. Jammu & Kashmir faces risks of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40 kmph. The IMD’s updated nowcast map highlights moderate to intense rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and North Madhya Pradesh, urging residents to brace for potential flooding and disruptions.
