Delhi Metro Changes Diwali Timings: Here’s When the Last Train Leaves
Delhi Metro adjusts Diwali 2025 timings with earlier starts and last trains.
As Delhi gears up for Diwali celebrations amidst escalating traffic congestion, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced revised train timings to accommodate the festive rush. On the eve of Diwali, October 19, metro services on the Pink, Magenta, and Grey Lines, typically commencing at 7:00 AM on Sundays, will start an hour earlier at 6:00 AM, ensuring smoother travel for commuters preparing for the festival of lights. This adjustment aims to alleviate the strain on Delhi’s roads, which see significant gridlock in the lead-up to Diwali.
On Diwali day, October 20, 2025, metro services will operate on regular schedules throughout the day, maintaining routine commencement timings across all lines, including the Airport Express Line (AEL). However, the DMRC has revised the last train departures, with services from all terminal stations concluding at 10:00 PM instead of the usual later timings. This change reflects the anticipated dip in late-night travel as families prioritize Diwali celebrations, including Lakshmi Puja during the evening Pradosh period, marking the festival’s peak.
Diwali, celebrated on October 20, coincides with the Kartik Amavasya tithi, spanning from the afternoon of October 20 to the evening of October 21. Rooted in Hindu tradition, the festival commemorates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, symbolized by the lighting of diyas across homes and cities. The DMRC’s proactive scheduling tweak underscores its role in supporting Delhi’s festive mobility, ensuring residents can navigate the city for shopping, family visits, and celebrations without relying solely on congested roads.

The revised timings highlight the DMRC’s commitment to balancing operational efficiency with the cultural significance of Diwali, a time when Delhi’s 20 million residents illuminate the capital in a vibrant display of unity and joy. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly, leveraging the metro’s early start on October 19 and noting the earlier last trains on October 20 to ensure a seamless festive experience in the bustling capital.
