Chhattisgarh’s Rail Revolution: New MEMU Train Links Raipur to Rajim
New MEMU train launched between Raipur and Rajim to boost connectivity in Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger train service between Raipur and Rajim on Thursday, while also extending the existing Raipur-Abhanpur MEMU service to Rajim. The launch, marked by a flagging-off ceremony in Rajim, is set to enhance regional connectivity, offering affordable and convenient travel options for residents, students, employees, and traders.
Speaking at the event, Sai highlighted the service’s significance, stating, “This new service will benefit residents of Rajim, Gariaband, and Deobhog, making travel to the state capital easier and cheaper.” He emphasized that Rajim, often called Chhattisgarh’s “Prayag” due to its religious significance, is now integrated into the rail network, fostering rural-urban connectivity. “Chhattisgarh has seen uninterrupted development for the past 19 months, with rapid investments in railway infrastructure shaping a new future,” Sai added, noting that the region previously relied on a narrow gauge service between Dhamtari and Raipur eight years ago.
The state has allocated ₹7,000 crore in the 2025-26 budget for railway modernization, with ongoing projects worth ₹45,000 crore, according to Sai. State Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap underscored the service’s potential to boost tourism and religious travel to Rajim, a key pilgrimage destination.

The Raipur-Abhanpur-Raipur MEMU service, extended to Rajim, will operate daily starting September 19, featuring an 8-coach rake with six general coaches and two power cars, as per South East Central Railway officials. The maiden journey saw a large number of passengers, signaling strong public enthusiasm for the new service. This development marks a significant step in Chhattisgarh’s efforts to modernize its rail infrastructure and enhance accessibility for its citizens.
