Delhi Hands Over 35 Acres for New GGSIPU and Teachers' University Campuses in Narela

Delhi LG hands over 35 acres of land to GGSIPU and Delhi Teachers' University for new campuses in Narela.

In a significant boost to Delhi’s higher education infrastructure, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Saturday handed over possession of 35 acres of land to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) and Delhi Teachers’ University (DeTU) for the establishment of new campuses in Narela. The handover ceremony was led by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, with Education Minister Ashish Sood receiving the documents on behalf of the institutions.

Both the Lieutenant Governor and the Education Minister described the land allotment as a historic milestone for Delhi’s education sector. They said the expansion of university campuses would help deliver quality education to students not only from the Capital but from across the country, addressing long-standing infrastructure constraints faced by higher education institutions.

According to an official release, the project had remained stalled earlier due to non-payment for the allotted land. The release stated that after the new government assumed office last year, the initiative gained momentum, with ₹500 crore allocated for land acquisition in the first budget. Of this, ₹452 crore has already been paid to the DDA, and an additional ₹500 crore has been sanctioned in the revised budget estimates for 2025–26.

The expansion of university campuses is part of a broader vision to develop Narela as an emerging education hub. The LG said the move would accelerate efforts to transform Narela into a model sub-city with modern infrastructure, benefiting residents of outer Delhi and adjoining districts of Haryana while boosting overall regional development.

Delhi Teachers’ University has been allotted 12.69 acres of land in Sector G-2/G-6, Narela, at a cost of ₹92.16 crore paid to the DDA. Currently operating from a school building in Mukherjee Nagar, the university has faced severe space constraints. The new campus will allow DeTU to establish dedicated academic and residential facilities for students and faculty.

Education Minister Ashish Sood said the upcoming Narela Education City will follow a shared-campus model based on global best practices. The campuses will feature modern libraries, advanced laboratories, auditoriums, digital learning facilities, sports complexes, and residential flats for faculty and staff. An estimated ₹567 crore investment is proposed for hostels, housing, and common facilities, which is expected to spur socio-economic development and local business growth in the region.
