Delhi Government Schools Face Major Shortage of Principals, Vice-Principals

As many as 828 posts of principals and vice-principals are vacant in Delhi government schools, according to recruitment details issued by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The vacancies include 124 principal posts and 704 vice-principal posts, highlighting a significant shortage in the leadership positions of schools run by the Delhi government's Directorate of Education.

The Directorate of Education operates around 1,090 government schools across the national capital. According to a circular issued by the department, applications were invited from July 25 to August 14 for the direct recruitment of 124 principals and 704 vice-principals. The recruitment is being conducted through the UPSC to fill posts earmarked for direct appointment.

According to data cited by the Principal and Vice-Principal Government School Association, Delhi has a sanctioned strength of 950 principal posts and 1,670 vice-principal posts. Half of the sanctioned positions in both categories are designated for direct recruitment through the UPSC, while the remaining positions are intended to be filled through promotion from within the education department.

Of the 475 principal positions reserved for direct recruitment, 124 are currently vacant, according to the UPSC recruitment advertisement. The association said approximately 250 principal positions under the promotional quota have been filled, leaving around 225 positions still vacant under that category.

The situation is more pronounced among vice-principals. Of the 835 vice-principal positions earmarked for direct recruitment, 704 remain vacant. The association said around 400 positions under the promotional quota are currently being managed by ad-hoc vice-principals, while approximately 435 posts in the promotional category remain vacant.

The large number of vacancies has raised concerns about the availability of permanent leadership in Delhi government schools. While the ongoing UPSC recruitment is expected to address a substantial portion of the vacancies, the remaining posts under the promotional quota will still require action to ensure that schools have adequate administrative and academic leadership.
