India Adds Attari Border, 10 Other Ports For E-Visa Holders

The Centre has added 11 international ports, including the Attari land border in Punjab, to the list of entry points available to foreign travellers holding Indian e-visas. The latest notification includes two airports and nine land ports, taking the total number of international entry points for e-visa holders to 88.

The two newly added airports are Bhopal and Tirupati, while the nine land ports include Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh, Attari (Road) and another newly notified entry point. The move is aimed at expanding access to India's electronic visa facility and providing travellers with more options to enter the country.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the 88 designated entry points now comprise 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports. Existing land-border entry points include Raxaul, Rupaidiha and Jogbani. The expansion is expected to make the e-visa system more useful for international visitors travelling to India through different regions and modes of transport.

The e-visa facility covers 17 categories of travellers, including tourists, business visitors, students, medical travellers, cruise passengers, transit travellers and mountaineers. The government said around 95 per cent of e-visa applications are processed within 72 hours, making the system a relatively quick option for eligible foreign nationals planning visits to India.

However, the facility does not apply to Pakistani passport holders or foreign nationals of Pakistani origin, as India does not issue e-visas to these applicants. Such travellers are required to apply for regular visas through an Indian diplomatic mission, according to the government's visa application portal.

India introduced its e-visa programme in 2014 for nationals of 43 countries as part of efforts to simplify the visa process. The facility has since expanded substantially and is now available to citizens of 172 countries, with the latest addition of entry points further widening the network through which eligible e-visa holders can enter India.
