Delhi Government Directs Schools To Conduct Year-Long Pollution Awareness Activities

Delhi schools to run year-long anti-pollution awareness drive with monthly environment-focused activities.

The Delhi government has launched a year-long anti-pollution awareness programme in schools across the capital, directing government, aided, and private institutions to conduct structured monthly activities aimed at tackling environmental challenges such as air pollution, plastic waste, water scarcity, and noise pollution.

According to a circular issued by the Science Branch of the Directorate of Education, schools have been instructed to implement the initiative throughout the 2026–27 academic session. The programme is designed to make environmental awareness a sustained part of student learning, rather than a one-time or symbolic exercise.

As part of the campaign, schools have been asked to adopt practical measures on campus, including waste segregation using separate bins for wet and dry waste, integrating environmental themes into morning assemblies, and encouraging students to reduce littering both inside and outside school premises. Officials said the goal is to create long-term behavioural change by involving students directly in environmental action.

The initiative began in April with a focus on plastic pollution, where students participated in activities such as cleanliness drives, poster-making competitions, and essay writing on reducing single-use plastics. The programme will continue with a month-wise thematic approach covering biodiversity awareness, water conservation, renewable energy, and anti-air pollution drives ahead of the winter smog season.

In October, schools will particularly focus on air pollution control measures, including discouraging firecracker use and open burning practices, which are major contributors to seasonal smog in the city. Winter months will emphasise dust control, plantation drives, and community awareness campaigns to address worsening air quality.

To ensure compliance, schools have been directed to submit monthly Action Taken Reports with photographic evidence to district authorities. The initiative reflects Delhi’s broader strategy of involving younger generations in environmental protection efforts, positioning students as key contributors to long-term efforts to combat the capital’s persistent pollution crisis.
