PM Modi To Inaugurate Delhi-Dehradun Expressway On April 14

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to reduce travel time to 2.5 hours, inaugurated by PM Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway on April 14, marking a major infrastructure milestone aimed at significantly improving connectivity between the national capital and Uttarakhand’s capital, Dehradun.

The 210-kilometre-long expressway has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹12,000 to ₹13,000 crore and is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from around 6.5 hours to approximately 2.5 hours once fully operational. The project is designed to ease traffic congestion, improve regional connectivity, and enhance road safety along one of North India’s busiest corridors.

The expressway begins near the Akshardham Temple in Delhi and passes through key towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Saharanpur, before reaching Dehradun in Uttarakhand. It is also integrated with major highway networks such as the Delhi–Meerut Expressway, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and the Char Dham Highway, strengthening its role as a key transport artery in northern India.

According to officials, the project includes several large-scale engineering features such as 113 underpasses, five railway overbridges, 16 entry and exit points, 62 bus shelters, and 76 kilometres of service roads. The corridor also includes designated commercial zones, with 12 locations developed for food courts and commuter facilities to improve travel convenience.

A notable feature of the expressway is the construction of Asia’s longest elevated wildlife corridor, spanning approximately 12 to 14 kilometres, designed to ensure safe animal movement and reduce ecological disruption. The project also includes the 340-metre Dat Kali Tunnel at its starting point, which is considered a key engineering component of the route.

As part of his visit to Uttarakhand, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to inaugurate India’s first variable-speed pumped storage plant in Tehri, developed by THDC India Limited with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts. He is also expected to address a public rally in Dehradun and offer prayers at the Maa Dat Kali temple located near the Uttarakhand–Uttar Pradesh border.
