Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Tragedy Highlights Fatal Consequences of Reversing on Highways
Four killed on Delhi-Dehradun expressway when reversing hatchback struck by SUV.
Four members of a family lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the newly opened Delhi-Dehradun Expressway after a hatchback allegedly reversed on a flyover near the Halgoya cut in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district. The incident occurred during a family trip to Haridwar involving 13 people travelling in two vehicles from Bahadurgarh in Haryana. According to reports, the accident has once again highlighted the dangers of reversing on high-speed expressways after missing an exit.
The family had left Bahadurgarh on Friday in two cars, with one vehicle carrying six occupants and the other seven. The lead vehicle was travelling around seven to eight kilometres ahead when the hatchback behind reportedly missed the designated exit and mistakenly drove onto a flyover. Instead of continuing to the next exit and rerouting, the driver allegedly attempted to reverse the vehicle to return to the missed turn.
The decision to reverse on the expressway proved fatal. Reports said the hatchback was struck by a speeding SUV travelling on the same stretch of road, resulting in a devastating collision. Four people died in the crash, while several others sustained injuries. Emergency services rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment, while police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Authorities believe the crash underscores one of the most common and dangerous mistakes committed by motorists on expressways and flyovers. Traffic experts have repeatedly warned that reversing or making sudden U-turns on access-controlled highways can leave approaching drivers with little time to react, significantly increasing the risk of high-speed collisions. Expressways are designed to allow vehicles to continue to the next designated exit rather than attempt unsafe manoeuvres.
Police are examining the sequence of events leading to the accident and are expected to rely on witness statements, vehicle damage assessments and available surveillance footage as part of the investigation. Officials have urged motorists to strictly follow traffic rules on expressways and avoid reversing under any circumstances, even if they miss an exit, as the safest option is to proceed to the next interchange and return through the designated route.
The accident has renewed concerns about road safety awareness on India's expanding network of high-speed expressways. As new corridors continue to improve travel times, authorities have stressed that drivers must adapt to expressway driving rules, where missing an exit may cause minor delays but attempting to reverse can have fatal consequences. Officials hope the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following lane discipline and approved traffic movements on access-controlled highways.
