Deep Depression Likely To Cause Six-Day Rainfall Across Tamil Nadu And Puducherry

Six-day rain spell likely as deep depression moves inland.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday forecast a six-day spell of rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal continues to influence weather patterns across parts of southern and eastern India.

According to the IMD bulletin, the deep depression currently lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal regions of north Odisha and West Bengal. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards over the next few days before making an inland shift towards North Odisha and North Chhattisgarh. While the system is positioned far from Tamil Nadu, its outer circulation is likely to draw moisture into the southern region.

Meteorologists have said this moisture incursion will create favourable conditions for intermittent rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between July 5 and July 10. The IMD has predicted moderate rain at isolated locations rather than widespread heavy downpours, though conditions may vary depending on the system’s intensity and movement.

In Chennai, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy with chances of light rain in isolated pockets during the day. Short spells of rain may occur intermittently, but prolonged or intense rainfall is not anticipated at this stage. Despite cloud cover, temperatures are likely to remain high, with the maximum hovering around 37 degrees Celsius and humidity levels staying elevated.

Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas to stay alert, as even moderate showers could lead to localized disruptions if rainfall persists. Local administrations are also expected to monitor conditions closely and respond to any weather-related issues that may arise during the forecast period.

The IMD has further stated that weather conditions may change depending on the movement of the deep depression as it progresses inland. Updated forecasts will be issued as the system evolves, while the expected rainfall is likely to provide partial relief from recent dry and humid conditions across parts of the state.
