CRPF Launches Core Team To Strengthen Suicide Prevention Measures Among Personnel

CRPF Forms Panel To Prevent Suicides.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has constituted a 10-member core group of senior officers to examine and prevent incidents of self-harm among its personnel, officials said. The move comes after India's largest paramilitary force recorded 59 suicides in 2025, the highest annual figure reported by the force in the last five years. The newly formed group will be headed by the CRPF Director General and will meet once every month to conduct a detailed review of suicide incidents involving personnel. Officials said the panel will examine the circumstances surrounding such cases and work towards identifying measures that could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The CRPF has a strength of around 3.25 lakh personnel and operates in some of India's most challenging security environments. Its personnel are deployed for counter-insurgency operations, internal security duties, protection of vital installations and election-related responsibilities, among other assignments. The nature of these duties can involve prolonged deployments away from families and demanding working conditions. According to official data cited by sources and reported by PTI, the force recorded 59 suicides during 2025. The figure was the highest in the five-year period under review, highlighting the need for closer institutional attention to the well-being of personnel.

Constabulary-rank employees accounted for more than 80 per cent of those who died by suicide during the year, according to the data. The creation of the core group is expected to provide a more systematic mechanism for reviewing such incidents rather than treating individual cases in isolation. By meeting every month, senior officers will be able to examine patterns and circumstances across cases and consider whether changes are required in areas such as personnel welfare, deployment practices, access to support and internal intervention mechanisms. The initiative comes as security forces across the country face increasing attention over the mental and emotional well-being of their personnel.

Forces such as the CRPF often operate under high-pressure conditions, with personnel spending extended periods away from their families and working in environments that can involve significant physical and psychological demands. The CRPF's decision to involve senior leadership in the review process also reflects the seriousness with which the force is treating the issue. With the Director General heading the group, the monthly meetings are intended to ensure that findings from individual cases are reviewed at the highest level and that potential preventive measures receive sustained attention. The concentration of cases among constabulary personnel is another area that the force is likely to examine closely.

Constables form the bulk of the CRPF's workforce and are frequently involved in operational and field duties. Understanding the specific challenges faced by personnel at these ranks could be important in developing targeted welfare and support measures. Officials have not indicated that the core group will focus on any single cause for the suicides. Such incidents can involve multiple personal, professional and social factors, making it important for authorities to examine each case individually while also looking for broader patterns. The monthly review mechanism could help the force identify recurring concerns and determine where intervention may be possible.

The CRPF's move follows the force's highest recorded number of suicides in five years and signals a greater institutional focus on prevention. The 10-member panel is expected to continue its monthly reviews and recommend measures aimed at reducing the incidence of self-harm among personnel. With the CRPF numbering around 3.25 lakh personnel, the issue has implications for a substantial workforce deployed across the country. The effectiveness of the new mechanism will depend on how its findings are translated into practical support and preventive measures for personnel, particularly those working in demanding operational environments.
