Crashfree India Highlights Compensation Shortfalls In Road Accident Cases
Study reveals gaps in compensation for road crash victims.
Road safety advocacy group Crashfree India has released a new research report revealing significant gaps in compensation for victims of road crashes across the country. The findings point to delays, inadequate payouts, and inconsistencies in the application of existing insurance and legal frameworks, prompting calls for urgent reforms.
The study analyzed data from several states over the past five years, examining how accident victims and their families access compensation from insurance companies and government schemes. Researchers found that many victims face bureaucratic hurdles, delayed claim settlements, and insufficient awareness about entitlements, resulting in financial and emotional strain.
Crashfree India emphasized that the disparities are particularly pronounced among vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and two-wheeler riders. “Despite legal provisions for compensation, victims often struggle to secure timely and adequate support, undermining the intent of road safety policies,” the report noted.

The research also highlighted the need for standardized procedures and transparent mechanisms for processing claims. Recommendations include improving coordination between law enforcement, insurance providers, and health services, as well as establishing a centralized digital platform to track and expedite claims.
Advocates argue that addressing these gaps is critical to fostering trust in the road safety ecosystem and ensuring justice for accident victims. The report underscores that improving compensation processes is not only a legal imperative but also a public health priority.
Crashfree India has called on policymakers, insurers, and civil society organizations to collaborate on implementing these recommendations. By bridging the gaps in compensation mechanisms, the group hopes to enhance both accountability and the quality of support provided to road crash victims nationwide.
