The Congress party expressed profound grief over the passing of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who died at 81 on Monday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi after a month-long battle with kidney-related ailments. Party leaders hailed Soren as a legendary figure whose lifelong fight for tribal rights and Jharkhand’s statehood left an indelible mark on Indian politics.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, described Soren’s death as a significant loss, emphasizing his relentless struggle for a separate Jharkhand and the rights of its people to water, forests, and land. Kharge personally conveyed condolences to Soren’s son, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and his family. The party postponed a scheduled press conference by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi as a mark of respect.
Rahul Gandhi, in a Hindi post on X, called Soren a “strong voice of the tribal society” whose role in Jharkhand’s creation would be forever remembered. “I express my deepest condolences to Hemant Soren ji and the entire Soren family,” he added. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed the sentiment, noting Soren’s advocacy for tribals, Dalits, and marginalized communities as deeply inspirational.
