Congress MLA Suspended Over Sexual Misconduct Claims
Kerala MLA's scandal sparks suspension.
The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has suspended MLA Rahul Mamkootathil from its primary membership for six months amid serious allegations of sexual misconduct. The decision, announced on Monday, follows a whirlwind of controversy that led to Mamkootathil stepping down as Youth Congress president last week. Despite pressure from party leaders and women legislators like Shanimol Usman and Uma Thomas, the young MLA has refused to resign from the Assembly, prompting the KPCC to opt for suspension to avoid a risky by-election in Palakkad.
The KPCC's move, finalized after consultations with leaders like Sunny Joseph, V.D. Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala, aims to limit political damage. Mamkootathil is now barred from parliamentary party meetings and other official forums. The leadership hopes this disciplinary action will quell the growing outrage, but the MLA’s refusal to address serious allegations head-on has left even his supporters puzzled.
Mamkootathil has been accused by a transwoman named Avantika of coercion and threats. In an attempt to defend himself, he released WhatsApp chats and phone conversations with the complainant on Sunday. However, a leaked audio clip, allegedly featuring Mamkootathil forcing a woman into an abortion and issuing death threats, has intensified the scandal. While Avantika claims the voice is his, the MLA has neither denied the allegations outright nor pursued forensic analysis to disprove them, raising doubts among party insiders.

The State Women’s Commission and Child Rights Commission have taken up the case after a second, more damaging audio surfaced. Mamkootathil, however, remains defiant, stating he will only respond if a formal case is filed and refusing to challenge the alleged fake recordings.
With the ruling CPI(M) and BJP demanding his resignation, the KPCC’s suspension strategy may not be enough to contain the fallout. As the controversy rages on, all eyes are on whether Mamkootathil will hold his ground or buckle under mounting pressure.
