#JustIn: Kerala Youth Congress Chief Quits Amid Scandal

Rahul Mamkootathil resigns over sexual misconduct allegations.

Rahul Mamkootathil, the Kerala Youth Congress president, resigned from his post on Thursday following a wave of sexual misconduct allegations, including complaints from women leaders within the party and a public accusation by actress Rini Ann George. Addressing the media at his residence in Adoor, Mamkootathil denied claims that the Congress leadership demanded his resignation but announced his decision to step down to prevent the party from being distracted by the controversy.

Sources confirmed that Mamkootathil submitted his resignation letter to the Congress national leadership and informed Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph over a phone call. The move follows reports of at least six complaints filed by women leaders with All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Deepa Das Munshi, who oversees Kerala affairs. The allegations, amplified on social media, prompted protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s youth wing, DYFI, demanding Mamkootathil’s resignation as an MLA.

Congress Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan had earlier declared that no one found guilty would be spared, signaling a firm stance on the issue. Mamkootathil, in his press conference, claimed he spoke with Satheesan, KPCC, and AICC leaders on Thursday morning, asserting that they did not demand his resignation. He described Rini Ann George, who accused “a young leader” of misbehavior, as a “good friend” and denied being the individual referenced in her complaint. “I have not done anything against the law or the Constitution,” he insisted.

Mamkootathil emphasized that his resignation was voluntary, aimed at ensuring that the Congress party and its workers focus on challenging the state government amid ongoing protests, rather than being bogged down by these allegations. “I still believe I have not committed any illegal act,” he said before abruptly ending the press conference and retreating into his home, refusing further comment.

Party sources indicate that former Youth Congress leader KM Abhijith is likely to assume temporary charge of the state unit as the Congress navigates the fallout. The controversy has intensified scrutiny on the party’s internal handling of misconduct allegations, raising questions about accountability and leadership within its youth wing.
