Congress Leaders Hail Jyotiba Phule’s Legacy On 200th Birth Anniversary

Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Kharge honour Jyotiba Phule’s legacy on his 200th birth anniversary.

The Congress party on Saturday paid rich tributes to social reformer Jyotiba Phule on the occasion of his 200th birth anniversary, with senior leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge leading commemorations and highlighting his enduring legacy in the fight for social justice and equality.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi described Phule as a visionary who dedicated his life to securing the rights of marginalised communities. In his message, he said Phule’s struggle against discrimination and inequality laid the foundation for a more just society, adding that his ideals continue to inspire efforts toward building an equitable nation.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also marked the occasion by quoting Phule’s philosophy on injustice and social responsibility. In a post on social media platform X, he described Phule—also known as “Krantisurya”—as a pioneer who fought against caste discrimination, social evils, and superstition, while promoting equality and women’s empowerment. Kharge said Phule’s life remains a guiding force for those working toward social transformation.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid tribute, calling Phule a key architect of India’s social reform movement. She emphasized his efforts to advance education among women and marginalised groups, noting that his vision helped lay the foundation for a more inclusive society rooted in justice and equality.

This year’s commemoration carries special significance as it marks 200 years since Phule’s birth, drawing renewed attention to his contributions as a reformer, thinker, and advocate of education-driven social change. Born in the 19th century, Phule challenged entrenched caste hierarchies and worked tirelessly to expand access to education, particularly for girls and disadvantaged communities.

Phule’s legacy continues to be celebrated for his belief that education is the cornerstone of social progress. He championed the idea that knowledge must not remain confined to privileged groups but should empower all sections of society, a philosophy that continues to influence social and educational discourse in India today.
