Computer Science Teacher Gunned Down Inside AMU Campus, Police Launch Intensive Probe

Professor gunned down during evening walk on campus.

In a grave security lapse that has shaken the academic community, Rao Danish Ali, a dedicated computer science teacher at Aligarh Muslim University’s ABK Union High School, was shot dead by two masked assailants on the university campus late Wednesday evening. The 45-year-old educator, an AMU alumnus who had been serving since 2015, was enjoying his regular evening stroll near the Maulana Azad Library when the brazen attack unfolded around 9 pm, highlighting vulnerabilities even within the guarded premises of the prestigious institution.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and directly confronted Ali and his two accompanying colleagues near a tubewell on the road leading to the library canteen. One assailant reportedly issued a menacing threat, declaring, "You don’t know me yet, now you will recognise who I am," before firing multiple shots at close range, striking the victim fatally in the head and spine. Despite immediate efforts by friends and nearby students who rushed to his aid after hearing the gunfire of approximately eight rounds, Ali succumbed to his injuries.

The victim lay critically wounded at the spot for nearly 15 minutes before his younger brother Faraz Ali, a guest lecturer at a local engineering college, arrived and transported him to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital attached to the university. Medical staff declared him brought dead upon arrival, prompting an outpouring of grief among faculty, students, and alumni who remembered him as a committed teacher from a family deeply connected to AMU.

Senior police officials, including Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Jadoun, swiftly reached the crime scene to supervise proceedings, with multiple investigation teams deployed to probe the incident thoroughly. Authorities are meticulously examining CCTV footage from across the campus and adjacent areas, though challenges from poor lighting and prevailing fog are complicating efforts, while interviews with family members and associates aim to uncover any potential personal disputes or motives.

The targeted killing has sparked widespread alarm and condemnation within the university, intensifying demands for enhanced security measures on campus as the investigation continues to identify the fleeing perpetrators and establish the circumstances leading to this shocking act of violence.
