Teacher Collapses and Dies After Intense Door-to-Door Voter Verification Duty in UP

58-year-old Ghaziabad teacher dies of brain haemorrhage while on stressful voter-list revision duty.

A 58-year-old college teacher in Ghaziabad tragically died at his residence on Friday night while performing duties as a booth-level officer (BLO) for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, officials confirmed. Lal Mohan Singh, a biology teacher at Modi Science and Commerce Inter College, reportedly suffered a brain haemorrhage, authorities said. The incident has sparked concerns over stress and pressure faced by officials during voter list updates.

The principal of Singh’s college, Satish Chand Agarwal, told reporters that the teacher had been unwell for some time and was under “heavy pressure” due to the door-to-door verification work mandated for the SIR exercise. “The administration had insisted that the work must be completed at any cost. He was working under extreme stress,” Agarwal said, highlighting the toll of administrative expectations on individuals tasked with the job.

Singh had been deployed for SIR duty in the Sahibabad Assembly constituency, which is part of the ongoing electoral roll revision in Uttar Pradesh. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Modinagar, Amit Saxena, stated that the SDM has been informed and is currently reviewing the administrative aspects surrounding the incident. No foul play has been indicated, and the cause of death is officially attributed to a brain haemorrhage.

The Special Intensive Revision exercise has been ongoing across the state since early November, aiming to update and verify voters’ lists. However, this process has repeatedly come under scrutiny after multiple deaths and suicides of BLOs and other officials involved. Reports cite overwork, harassment, and extreme pressure from electoral authorities as contributing factors to the incidents.

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have faced calls to address these systemic issues, balancing the need for rigorous voter verification with the welfare of officials performing this demanding work. The tragic death of Lal Mohan Singh highlights the human cost of administrative pressure in high-stakes government exercises and has prompted renewed discussion about the working conditions of election officials.
