CM Vijay Directs Police To Fast-Track Sexual Crime Investigations Across Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore case triggers statewide crackdown on sexual offenses.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday directed police officials across the state to take strict and immediate action in cases involving sexual crimes, particularly those against women and children. The directive came during a high-level review meeting held at the State Secretariat following public outrage over the alleged abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore district’s Sulur taluk.

According to an official statement shared by the Chief Minister’s Office on X, Vijay instructed authorities to ensure that cases involving heinous crimes are registered without delay, investigated swiftly, and prosecuted effectively to secure stringent punishment for offenders. The meeting focused on reviewing crimes against women and children, accelerating legal proceedings in such cases, strengthening preventive mechanisms, and improving public awareness initiatives.

Senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Police, the Social Welfare Department, and the office of the Advocate General attended the meeting. During the discussions, the Chief Minister emphasized that sexual offence cases must be treated on a fast-track basis. He called for stronger coordination between investigators and prosecutors to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice quickly and effectively.

The renewed focus on law enforcement follows the arrest of two men in connection with the death of a 10-year-old girl in Sulur taluk, Coimbatore. Police said the child was allegedly abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered, sparking widespread anger among local residents. The incident led to a massive protest outside the Sulur police station, where relatives and members of the public staged a road blockade for nearly nine hours demanding the harshest possible punishment for the accused.

Authorities identified one of the accused as Karthi, while the second suspect, 30-year-old Mohan of Pallampalayam, was arrested as an alleged accomplice. Police officials stated that both men are daily wage labourers. Karthi has been booked under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while Mohan faces charges related to criminal conspiracy. Inspector General of Police Ramya confirmed that the investigation is progressing and that authorities are collecting additional evidence.

The case has intensified political and public scrutiny over crimes against children in Tamil Nadu and has renewed calls for faster judicial processes and stronger safeguards for vulnerable groups. The state government has indicated that it intends to strengthen enforcement measures and ensure stricter handling of sexual offence cases amid growing demands for accountability and public safety.
