North Bengal to get AIIMS, IIT, IIM facilities.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced a series of major infrastructure commitments for North Bengal, including the establishment of an IIT, IIM, AIIMS, and a cancer hospital in the region, as part of promises made in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election manifesto. Speaking to reporters in Siliguri during his first visit to North Bengal after taking oath, Adhikari said the proposed institutions would be developed under the BJP’s “Sankalpa Patra” commitments.
He added that the initiative is aimed at accelerating higher education, healthcare infrastructure, and regional development in North Bengal. The announcement includes plans for an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and a specialised cancer hospital. According to the Chief Minister, these institutions are expected to significantly improve access to advanced education and tertiary healthcare in the region.
Adhikari also outlined a governance plan focused on increased administrative presence in North Bengal. He stated that both the Chief Minister and cabinet members would visit the region every month to monitor development projects and ensure implementation of key initiatives on the ground. He further announced that the North Bengal Development Minister would be stationed at Uttarkanya, the state’s mini secretariat in Siliguri, on a weekly basis to oversee administrative work and maintain closer coordination with local governance structures.

Describing his visit as work-oriented, Adhikari said he intended to engage directly with development activities rather than treat the trip as ceremonial or symbolic. He emphasised that sustained administrative attention would be given to the region moving forward. The announcement comes amid the new government’s early efforts to outline its development roadmap following its electoral victory earlier this year, with a focus on strengthening institutional infrastructure and regional connectivity across West Bengal.
