CM Sharma Urges Citizens To Reduce Fuel Use And Shift To Alternative Energy Sources

CM Sharma urges public movement for fuel conservation and transition to alternative energy sources.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Friday called for turning fuel conservation into a mass public movement and urged citizens to adopt cleaner and alternative energy sources to address future energy challenges. Speaking at the Rajasthan Energy Conclave in Jaipur, Sharma stressed that reducing dependence on petrol and diesel had become essential amid rising global energy concerns and increasing environmental pressures.

Addressing government officials, industry representatives, and energy sector stakeholders, the Chief Minister said energy conservation is the “most economical, effective, and sustainable” alternative to expanding energy production. He emphasised that disciplined use of resources and wider public participation would be critical in helping the country move toward long-term energy self-reliance. Sharma also highlighted Rajasthan’s growing contribution to India’s renewable energy sector, particularly in solar power generation.

The Chief Minister linked the initiative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging citizens to reduce fuel consumption and adopt more sustainable lifestyle practices amid global energy uncertainties. Sharma said the Rajasthan government had already issued directives to minimise unnecessary use of government vehicles and reduce the size of official convoys as part of broader fuel-saving measures. He also arrived at the conclave in an electric vehicle, symbolically promoting cleaner transportation alternatives.

Sharma urged greater adoption of electric vehicles, public transport, and other environmentally sustainable practices, stating that such steps would help lower carbon emissions while strengthening environmental protection efforts. He said Rajasthan possesses vast potential in non-conventional energy and is steadily emerging as a major centre for green energy development in India. According to the Chief Minister, the state’s renewable energy expansion could also create employment opportunities and attract fresh investment in the clean energy sector.

The remarks come at a time when India is facing growing concerns over energy security due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and fluctuations in global crude oil prices. Prime Minister Modi recently appealed to citizens to conserve petrol and diesel, reduce unnecessary travel, increase use of electric vehicles, and prioritise domestic resources to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Several state governments and political leaders have since announced measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and promoting energy efficiency.

Rajasthan has increasingly positioned itself as a key player in India’s renewable energy transition, particularly through large-scale solar and wind energy projects across desert regions. Analysts say the state’s continued focus on green energy infrastructure and conservation policies could strengthen its role in supporting India’s long-term climate and energy goals while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
