Pinarayi Vijayan Criticises Fuel Price Hike, Demands Rollback
Kerala CM criticises fuel price hike and urges Centre to reconsider decision.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly criticised the recent hike in fuel prices, particularly cooking gas, and has called on the Union government to immediately roll back the increase, arguing that it places an excessive burden on ordinary citizens and small businesses.
In a statement, Vijayan said the latest revision in LPG prices reflects a policy approach that prioritises corporate profits over public welfare. He alleged that the Centre’s decision to increase fuel prices disproportionately impacts working-class households, migrant workers, and small entrepreneurs who are already facing financial strain due to rising living costs.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices—reportedly rising by around ₹993 to over ₹3,000—has severely affected the hospitality sector, including hotels and restaurants. He also pointed out that the 5kg LPG cylinders commonly used by small families and migrant workers have seen an increase of about ₹251.5, further adding to household expenses.

Vijayan warned that such steep price hikes could force small businesses, especially in the food and service industries, to reduce operations or even shut down. He noted that the timing of the increase, following state elections and amid ongoing global energy pressures, has intensified its impact on consumers across Kerala and other states.
Reiterating his demand, the Chief Minister urged the Union government to reconsider its pricing policy and withdraw the recent hike. He stated that essential fuel pricing should not become a tool that deepens economic inequality or creates hardship for vulnerable sections of society. The statement adds to a growing political debate over fuel pricing in India, with several states raising concerns about inflationary pressures and their impact on everyday living costs.
