CM Sangma Commits To Sustainable Water Supply Across Meghalaya
Meghalaya CM commits to sustainable drinking water under Jal Jeevan Mission.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring safe and sustainable drinking water access for every household, following the signing of a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
The MoU was formalized via video conference between the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, and the Government of Meghalaya. The signing was attended by CM Sangma and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, along with senior officials from both the state and central governments.
Highlighting Meghalaya’s priorities, CM Sangma emphasized a comprehensive, long-term approach to water management, with particular focus on sustainability and source rejuvenation. “We are committed to ensuring that every household has access to safe drinking water. At the same time, we are addressing challenges related to water sources holistically to ensure long-term sustainability,” he said.

The Chief Minister also noted that the state government is taking responsibility for addressing water availability and management issues through coordinated planning and implementation, especially in rural areas where source sustainability remains a challenge. The MoU lays out a framework for implementing water supply schemes, with the Centre releasing funds while the state assumes primary responsibility for execution and service delivery.
Union Minister C.R. Patil stressed that achieving last-mile connectivity in drinking water supply is critical to fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat.” He highlighted the need for efficiency, outcome-based implementation, and convergence with other initiatives, including the G-RAM-G programme, to maximize impact.
The programme concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening water security in Meghalaya. Senior officials, including Meghalaya PHE Secretary Pravin Bakshi, were present during the event, underscoring the collaborative effort between the state and central governments to ensure safe and sustainable water access for all households.
