CM Khemchand Singh’s Manipur Message: Peace Must Come Before Development

Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Saturday emphasised that peace and stability are essential for the state's development, calling for mutual trust and harmony among communities. Hoisting the National Flag at the First Manipur Rifles Ground on the occasion of Independence Day, Singh highlighted the need for sustained efforts to restore normalcy and create conditions for economic growth.

Singh noted that India is among the world's fastest-growing economies and has made significant progress in areas such as infrastructure and manufacturing. He said Manipur's development would depend on the restoration of peace and pointed to steps taken by the Centre to improve the law and order situation. He also referred to ongoing discussions with representatives of different communities as part of efforts to address tensions.

Manipur has witnessed prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023 between the valley-based Meiteis and Kuki communities in the hill districts. At least 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced during the clashes. Following continued unrest and the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, President's Rule was imposed in the state on February 13, 2025, before being lifted on February 4, 2026, after which Khemchand Singh took charge as Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister stressed that lasting peace could be achieved through mutual trust and by fostering what he described as “love among all communities”. He said development projects were being implemented across the state but acknowledged that continuing incidents of violence had created apprehension about the peace process and efforts to restore stability.

Singh also condemned the latest violence in Kangpokpi district, where two people were killed and two others injured after suspected militants opened fire at Langka Naga village on Friday. He assured that the state government would take steps to ensure that those responsible were arrested. The incident came as authorities continue efforts to improve security and prevent further violence.

The Chief Minister also outlined broader priorities for his government, including creating better opportunities for young people, empowering women, supporting farmers and entrepreneurs and protecting Manipur's cultural heritage. He linked these goals to the restoration of peace, maintaining that stability and mutual trust would be necessary for the state to achieve sustained development.
