CJI Surya Kant to Hear Urgent Cases on December 22 Despite Court Holidays

CJI Surya Kant announces one or two SC benches may sit on Dec 22 for urgent cases during holiday period.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant on Friday indicated that he may sit on December 22, the first day of the apex court’s Christmas and New Year holidays, to hear urgent cases. The announcement comes as the Supreme Court prepares to remain closed from December 22 to January 2, 2026.

A bench led by CJI Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, emphasized that the registry will verify the urgency of cases before listing them. “We will sit on Monday. We are not going to burden other Supreme Court judges, who have to study case files late at night to hear new cases. I will not bother any other bench,” the CJI clarified.

The number of benches to sit on December 22 will depend on the volume of urgent matters, the Chief Justice added. “We are not sure whether one or two benches will sit; it will all depend on the number of cases. We will pass appropriate orders for the constitution of the bench,” he said.

Junior lawyers seeking urgent listing of cases were instructed to argue their matters on December 22. “We will hear this case on Monday only if you argue your matter,” CJI Kant told a junior lawyer, stressing the need for preparedness.

The decision to hold special benches underscores the Supreme Court’s commitment to timely judicial intervention, even during extended holiday breaks. Legal experts say this approach ensures that matters requiring immediate attention are not delayed due to the seasonal recess.

The registry has been tasked with coordinating the schedule and verifying the urgency of cases, while the CJI-led bench will oversee the proceedings to ensure smooth handling of high-priority matters before the court closes for the holidays.
