CJI Surya Kant Hails Goa’s Anti-Drug Campaign as Example for India
CJI praises Goa's anti-drug drive as a model for other states.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Sunday lauded Goa for its proactive stance against drug abuse, calling the state’s month-long awareness campaign on “drug abuse – a menace to society” a model for other states to emulate. Speaking at the closing ceremony, he highlighted the “spirit of Goa” reflected not only in its heritage and streets but also in the resilience of its citizens.
CJI Kant emphasized that drug abuse silently infiltrates homes, schools, and communities, eroding potential and distorting futures. He praised the campaign for equipping citizens with awareness, knowledge, and the ability to confront the growing menace, calling it a blend of law and compassion that protects society while promoting justice.
“When I walked through Goa’s vibrant lanes, it was clear that the DNA of this state is embedded in its culture of preservation, heritage, and civic pride. This campaign strengthens that spirit by guiding citizens to resist societal challenges, including drug abuse,” the CJI said.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant underlined the state government’s zero-tolerance policy toward drugs, asserting that protecting youth from substance abuse is a moral obligation. He noted that law enforcement agencies, supported by modern technology and central agencies, are actively dismantling drug networks and arresting traffickers to ensure public safety.
The CJI also praised Goa’s approach as a national benchmark, stating that the campaign effectively balances enforcement with public awareness, reflecting decades of evolution in India’s justice and governance systems. “Law without compassion becomes tyranny; compassion without law becomes chaos. This initiative demonstrates a middle path,” he said.
Officials and participants highlighted that the campaign involved outreach in schools, colleges, and communities, aiming to educate youth about the dangers of drug abuse while fostering societal responsibility. The event concluded with calls for other states to adopt similar strategies to protect their citizens and strengthen social resilience.
