CBSE Class 10 Students Must Take First Board Exam To Qualify For Second
First exam participation is required for the second board exam.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is expected to continue its two-board-examination system for Class 10 students in the 2027 examination cycle. The policy was introduced from the 2026 examination session in line with recommendations under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Under the system, eligible students get an opportunity to improve their performance in up to three subjects through the second examination.
However, students cannot simply skip the first board examination and appear directly for the second one. According to the CBSE guidelines issued for the previous examination cycle, appearing in the first main examination is mandatory for students who wish to be considered for the second examination. The rules also specify the conditions under which students can use the second examination for improvement or to clear compartment requirements.
Students who pass the first examination can seek improvement in up to three subjects from among Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages, subject to the board's eligibility conditions. Students placed in the Compartment category can also appear in the second examination under the applicable category. The guidelines also provide provisions for certain students appearing under Compartment plus Improvement and other specified circumstances.

A student must have appeared in at least three subjects in the first main examination to be eligible for the second examination. Those who do not appear in three or more subjects in the first examination will not be allowed to use the second examination as an alternative attempt. Such students would instead have to appear in the main examination in the following academic cycle, according to the stated rules.
Students who fail in three or more subjects in the first examination are also not eligible for the second board examination under the previous guidelines. Students placed in the ER category are similarly excluded. The board has also specified certain provisions for students such as those given permission to appear due to sports commitments and candidates seeking improvement following replacement of a subject.
The examination fee for the second board examination in the previous cycle was Rs 320 per subject, with a maximum of Rs 960 for three subjects. The detailed rules, eligibility requirements and fee structure for the 2027 examinations will depend on the CBSE's official notification for that examination cycle. Students should therefore check the latest CBSE circular before making decisions about their board examination attempts.
