CBI Moves Delhi High Court Against Excise Case Discharge Order
Agency challenges trial court relief in excise case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday moved the Delhi High Court challenging a special court order that discharged former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia and 21 others in the alleged excise policy case.
Hours after the trial court’s decision, the federal agency filed its appeal, arguing that key aspects of the investigation were not properly considered. According to sources cited by Press Trust of India (PTI), the CBI believes the court overlooked significant material while assessing whether charges should be framed.
In a statement, a CBI spokesperson said the agency decided to immediately approach the High Court because “several aspects of the investigation have either been ignored or not considered adequately” in the trial court’s judgement.

Earlier in the day, the special court discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia and the other accused after declining to take cognisance of the CBI’s chargesheet related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. The ruling marked a major relief for the AAP leadership in the high-profile corruption probe.
Among those discharged was K Kavitha, President of Telangana Jagruthi. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the liquor policy introduced by the previous AAP government in the national capital.
The High Court is now expected to examine the CBI’s appeal in the coming days, a move that could determine whether proceedings in the excise policy case are revived or the trial court’s discharge order stands.
