Case Filed Against Five Over Objectionable Facebook Posts Targeting KC Venugopal

A case has been registered against five people for allegedly posting defamatory and objectionable content targeting AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on Facebook, police said on Monday. The Alappuzha Cyber Police registered the case following a complaint filed by advocate Johnson Abraham on Sunday night. The alleged posts were published on different dates between May 11 and July 19.

According to police, the posts allegedly targeted Venugopal with content intended to create hatred and provoke a breach of public peace. The five people have been booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Kerala Police Act. The sections cited by police relate to circulating false information with an alleged intention to create or promote enmity, giving illegal provocation that could lead to a riot and causing nuisance.

The case comes after political discussions over the choice of the next chief minister following the United Democratic Front's victory in the Kerala assembly election. Police said Venugopal's name was among those being discussed for the post at the time. The accused allegedly used social media posts to oppose his candidature during the period when discussions over the leadership were taking place.

The complaint was filed by Johnson Abraham, who approached the Alappuzha Cyber Police over the alleged social media activity. Police said details of the accused persons and the posts in question have been collected as part of the preliminary investigation. The authorities are now expected to question those named in the case and examine the circumstances surrounding the posts.

The case concerns allegations made by the complainant and police, and the allegations against the five accused have not been established in court. The investigation will examine the content of the Facebook posts, the accounts from which they were published and whether the material falls within the offences cited in the case. Police will also determine the role of each person named during the course of the inquiry.

The registration of the case adds to the recent scrutiny of social media activity surrounding political figures in Kerala. Police said further investigation would be carried out after questioning the accused and examining the available digital evidence. The authorities have not indicated any final findings regarding the allegations, and the investigation remains ongoing.
