Bus-Truck Collision In Jalpaiguri Leaves Four Dead, 30 Injured; CM Announces Relief

Bus-truck collision in Jalpaiguri kills four, injures thirty.

Four people were killed and around 30 others injured after a passenger bus collided with a stationary truck on National Highway-27 in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Sunday, police said. The accident occurred near Ulladabri when the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) bus rammed into the rear of a parked truck around 11:30 am.

According to officials, the bus was travelling from Maynaguri to Domohani in Paschim Bardhaman district when the crash took place. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the front portion of the bus completely mangled and trapping several passengers inside the vehicle. Local police and emergency teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.

Rescue efforts continued for several hours as passengers were pulled out of the wreckage and shifted to nearby hospitals. Officials confirmed that four passengers were declared dead, while at least 30 others sustained injuries of varying severity. Medical teams have been deployed to provide treatment, and some of the injured remain under observation.

Preliminary observations suggest that adverse weather conditions and a slippery road surface may have contributed to the accident. However, police officials have stated that the exact cause will be determined only after a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are also examining whether the parked truck had appropriate safety indicators in place at the time of the incident.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the tragedy and announced compensation for the victims. She said the state government would provide Rs 5 lakh to the families of those killed, Rs 1 lakh to those seriously injured, and Rs 50,000 to passengers with minor injuries. She also directed senior officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured. In her statement on social media, the Chief Minister conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and described the incident as deeply distressing.

She added that district administration officials and police teams were actively engaged in rescue and relief operations at the site. Authorities have intensified monitoring along National Highway-27 following the accident, while a formal investigation has been launched to determine liability and prevent similar incidents in the future. The crash has once again raised concerns over road safety and the risks posed by improperly parked heavy vehicles on national highways.
