BRS Mulls VP Poll Stance, Signals Congress Opposition
KTR Hints at Rejecting Telangana CM’s Candidate
The Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), maintaining its equidistance from both the NDA and INDIA alliances, has yet to decide its position on the upcoming Vice-Presidential election scheduled for September 9, 2025, said party working president K T Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, KTR hinted at opposing the Congress-backed candidate, retired Supreme Court Judge B Sudershan Reddy, while emphasizing that the BRS’s decision would prioritize Telangana’s interests.
The NDA has fielded Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, while the INDIA alliance, led by Congress, has nominated Reddy, a Telangana native. KTR noted that neither alliance has approached the BRS, which holds four Rajya Sabha seats but no Lok Sabha representation, for support. “No one has asked for our support. There is still time. Our party will discuss and decide before the poll date,” he said.
KTR accused both the BJP and Congress of neglecting Telangana, proposing that the BRS would consider backing any party guaranteeing two lakh tons of urea for the state’s farmers. He took a sharp jab at Congress, particularly targeting Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, stating, “We will certainly oppose whoever is supported by Revanth Reddy because Congress is a third-class party. How can we support their candidate?” He further criticized Congress for not fielding a Backward Class (BC) candidate, questioning their commitment to BC welfare.

The BRS’s stance reflects its broader strategy of leveraging regional sentiments, especially after losing power to Congress in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections. Posts on X highlight the delicate position BRS faces, with some users urging support for Reddy as a Telangana native, while others back KTR’s focus on state-specific demands like urea supply.
With the election approaching, the BRS’s decision could influence the outcome, given the absence of party whips in the parliamentary vote. KTR stressed that the party’s choice would align with the “mood, aspirations, and benefits” of Telangana’s people.
