BJP Corporator Ritu Tawde Elected Unopposed To Mumbai BMC Mayoral Position
BJP corporator Ritu Tawde is elected unopposed as BMC Mayor, strengthening the party’s hold in Mumbai civic body.
BJP corporator Ritu Tawde has been elected unopposed as the Mayor of Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), marking a significant political milestone for the party. The election took place on February 11, 2026, at the BMC headquarters, where Municipal Commissioner and Presiding Officer Bhushan Gagrani declared her the sole valid nominee for the post. Tawde, a two-time corporator from Ghatkopar East (Ward 132), becomes the eighth woman to hold the office and the first BJP mayor in Mumbai in over four decades, since Dr. Prabhakar Pai's tenure in 1982–83.
The unopposed election resulted from the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, deciding not to field a challenger against Tawde. This strategic move cleared the path for her uncontested victory, ending the Thackeray family's 25-year dominance over the mayoral post in India's richest civic body. The Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde), and other partners—holds a commanding majority in the 227-member BMC following the delayed civic polls concluded in early 2026. Tawde's nomination was announced earlier in February, reflecting the alliance's confidence in securing the top civic position.
Simultaneously, Shiv Sena corporator Sanjay Ghadi was elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor, reinforcing the power-sharing arrangement within the Mahayuti coalition. Ghadi's selection ensures representation for the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which has aligned closely with the BJP at the state level. The dual elections concluded smoothly without contest, allowing Tawde to formally assume office on the same day. Her appointment follows a period of administrative rule in the BMC after the previous term expired, with no elected mayor in place for several years due to delayed polls.

Tawde, born in 1973 and a senior BJP leader, brings experience as a ward representative focused on local development issues in Ghatkopar. Her elevation is seen as a boost for the BJP's influence in urban Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai's civic governance, which oversees a massive budget and key infrastructure projects. The outcome highlights the shifting dynamics in Maharashtra politics, where the Mahayuti alliance has consolidated control over both state and municipal institutions.
The election underscores the BJP's growing footprint in Mumbai's civic affairs after years of Shiv Sena dominance. With Tawde at the helm, the BMC is expected to prioritize ongoing urban challenges such as infrastructure upgrades, sanitation, and flood management under the Mahayuti government's agenda. Leaders from the alliance have welcomed the development, viewing it as a step toward effective governance in the financial capital. Opposition voices, including from Sena (UBT), have remained relatively muted on the mayoral outcome, focusing instead on broader political critiques.
