BJP-Congress Face-Off Over Ram Mandir Donation Forces Chhattisgarh Assembly Adjournment

The Chhattisgarh Assembly was adjourned for the day on Monday after heated exchanges between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress over allegations of financial irregularities involving donations meant for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The confrontation erupted during the opening day of the Monsoon Session, disrupting proceedings and bringing legislative business to a halt. The session began on a solemn note, with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai leading the House in paying tributes to noted Pandwani exponent and Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai following her demise.

Members observed the customary condolences, with the Chief Minister remembering the legendary folk artist for her contribution to Chhattisgarh's cultural heritage and Indian folk traditions. The atmosphere changed during Question Hour when Leader of the Opposition Charandas Mahant moved an Adjournment Motion seeking an immediate discussion on the alleged misappropriation of donations made by devotees for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The Congress demanded that the issue be taken up for debate, arguing that it was a matter of public importance involving the sentiments of millions of devotees.

Congress legislators accused the BJP of protecting those allegedly responsible for the irregularities and described the issue as an affront to public faith. Mahant argued that since the Chhattisgarh Assembly had earlier passed a resolution welcoming the construction of the Ram Mandir, it was equally important for the House to discuss allegations concerning the handling of donations. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also criticised the alleged irregularities, describing them as "dacoity" during the proceedings. The ruling BJP objected to the opposition's demand, leading to sharp exchanges between members of both sides.

As the confrontation intensified, legislators raised slogans and continued to protest inside the House, making it difficult for the Assembly to conduct scheduled business. The alleged financial irregularities referred to by the opposition have become the subject of political debate, with Congress demanding accountability and transparency. The BJP, however, disputed the opposition's assertions during the Assembly proceedings.

No findings establishing the allegations were presented during the debate, and the matter remains part of an ongoing political controversy. The disruption underscores the increasingly confrontational atmosphere between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Chhattisgarh, where contentious national issues have frequently spilled over into state legislative proceedings. The Monsoon Session is expected to witness further debates on governance, public welfare and other key issues in the coming days.

With the Assembly adjourned amid the uproar, attention will now turn to whether the opposition renews its demand for a discussion when the House reconvenes. The Ram Mandir donation issue is likely to remain a politically charged subject, with both the BJP and Congress expected to continue defending their respective positions inside and outside the legislature.
