Champat Rai Resigns As Ram Temple Trust Accepts Decision Amid Donation Probe
Ram Temple Trust accepts Champat Rai resignation.
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has accepted the resignation of its General Secretary Champat Rai, marking a significant organisational change amid an ongoing controversy over alleged irregularities in the handling of donations linked to the Ram Mandir. The development comes at a sensitive time for the Trust as it continues to oversee the management and expansion of one of India’s most prominent religious institutions following its recent construction milestones.
Sources indicate that Rai had already stepped down in connection with the donation-related row, and his resignation has now been formally accepted by the Trust’s governing body. While he has relinquished the responsibilities of General Secretary, he is expected to continue serving as a trustee unless he chooses otherwise. His continued presence within the Trust structure suggests that the leadership transition is being handled in a phased manner rather than an immediate overhaul.
The acceptance of Rai’s resignation has triggered discussions within the Trust about leadership restructuring, particularly as it moves into a phase focused on long-term administration, donor management and institutional consolidation. Officials associated with the Trust believe that the scale of operations surrounding the Ram Mandir requires stronger administrative systems and more formalised financial oversight, especially given the large volume of donations and public interest associated with the temple project.

Attention has now turned to potential successors for the key administrative post. Among the frontrunners is Bajrang Bagra, currently the International General Secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Bagra is a chartered accountant by profession and previously headed the public sector undertaking NALCO. His background in finance, governance and public sector administration is seen by insiders as an advantage in managing the Trust’s increasingly complex operational requirements.
According to sources, the Trust is actively considering candidates with strong administrative and financial expertise to ensure better transparency and efficiency in its functioning. With the Ram Mandir now a major religious and national landmark attracting millions of devotees and substantial financial contributions, the need for structured governance mechanisms has become more pronounced. The leadership transition is therefore being viewed not only as a personnel change but also as part of a broader effort to professionalise the Trust’s institutional framework.
However, a final decision on the appointment of the new General Secretary is not expected in the immediate term. Internal consultations are ongoing, and the Trust is likely to evaluate multiple candidates before arriving at a consensus. The transition is being managed carefully to ensure continuity in day-to-day operations while avoiding administrative disruption during a politically and socially sensitive period.
Organisational developments are also expected to be influenced by upcoming meetings of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The organisation’s biannual national executive meeting is scheduled to take place in Delhi on July 19–20, where key structural and leadership-related decisions are expected to be discussed. These discussions may have a bearing on future appointments and the broader organisational direction of bodies associated with the Ram Mandir ecosystem.
The current developments come against the backdrop of heightened scrutiny over donation management and governance practices linked to the temple trust. While authorities have not issued detailed findings publicly, the controversy has placed renewed focus on accountability mechanisms within religious institutions handling large-scale public contributions. As the Trust moves forward, observers expect greater emphasis on compliance, financial transparency and administrative discipline, alongside continued efforts to manage one of the most significant religious sites in the country.
