Bihar Deputy CM Faces Voter Fraud Scandal

EC probes Vijay Sinha’s dual voter ID allegations.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notice to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, a senior BJP leader, for allegedly possessing two voter ID cards and being registered as an elector in two constituencies—Lakhisarai and Bankipur in Patna—according to officials. The notice, issued by the Electoral Registration Officer for Bankipur, demands Sinha explain the dual registration by August 14, following accusations from RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.

Yadav, the Bihar assembly’s Leader of Opposition, claimed Sinha holds two Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) with different ages—57 in Lakhisarai (EPIC: IAF3939337) and 60 in Bankipur (EPIC: AFS0853341)—questioning whether this constitutes fraud. “Who is responsible, Sinha or the Election Commission? When will he resign?” Yadav asked, noting the issue persisted post the ECI’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar shared draft electoral roll screenshots on X, questioning if Sinha voted twice, though PTI could not verify their authenticity.

Sinha denied the allegations, stating he and his family were previously registered in Bankipur but applied in April 2024 to shift to Lakhisarai, submitting a form to remove their names from Bankipur. “For some reason, my name wasn’t removed,” he said, claiming he has evidence and voted only once. He accused Yadav of spreading misinformation and demanded an apology.

The controversy follows the ECI’s recent notice to Yadav for allegedly holding two EPIC numbers, which he dismissed as an attempt to pin officials’ errors on him. The dispute has intensified political tensions, with opposition leaders alleging systemic issues in Bihar’s voter roll revisions ahead of upcoming elections.
