Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Fraud Claims Debunked by EC
Poll body refutes Congress leader’s vote theft allegations.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) dismissed fresh claims of voter fraud made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who alleged widespread “vote theft” in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. During a Thursday presentation, Gandhi cited the case of 70-year-old Shakun Rani, claiming she was registered twice as a first-time voter using Form 6 and voted twice, supported by a document with alleged polling officer tick marks.
The ECI, in a five-point rebuttal, clarified that Shakun Rani voted only once and that the document Gandhi presented was not issued by a polling officer. The EC has issued a notice to Gandhi, demanding evidence for his claims to enable a detailed inquiry.
Gandhi further alleged that the EC and BJP were colluding to manipulate elections, claiming his party’s requests for digital voter lists and CCTV footage were denied. The ECI labeled his analysis “distorted and baseless,” urging him to submit allegations under oath or apologize. The BJP’s Amit Malviya defended the EC, accusing Gandhi of maligning a constitutional body and demanding he provide evidence of ineligible voters under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.
The controversy coincides with the INDIA bloc’s planned march from Parliament to the ECI office in Delhi on August 11, protesting alleged vote rigging and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will also host a dinner for INDIA bloc MPs, signaling a unified opposition push for electoral transparency.
