Bengaluru Traffic Delays NEET-UG Re-Examination Candidates; Gates Closed at 1:30 PM

Several candidates appearing for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination were denied entry to an examination centre in Bengaluru on Sunday after arriving beyond the prescribed reporting deadline, triggering debate on social media over exam-day punctuality and enforcement of rules. The incident took place at Government Ramnarayan Chellaram College on Palace Road as thousands of students across the country appeared for the highly competitive medical entrance examination under enhanced security arrangements.

Videos that quickly circulated online showed emotional scenes outside the examination centre, with students and their family members expressing distress after being refused entry. In one widely shared clip, a candidate was seen attempting to climb over the closed gate after officials declined to allow entry. The footage sparked mixed reactions online, with some sympathising with the students while others argued that examination rules must be applied uniformly.

The re-examination was conducted nationwide from 2 pm to 5.15 pm, with the National Testing Agency (NTA) implementing strict procedures to ensure fairness and security. Candidates had been instructed to begin reporting to centres from 11 am onwards. As per official guidelines, entry gates were scheduled to close at 1.30 pm, and no candidate was permitted to enter after that time regardless of the reason for delay.

Officials at the Bengaluru centre enforced the rules in accordance with NTA regulations, leading to several late-arriving students being turned away. The testing agency had previously advised candidates to reach their examination venues well in advance, citing additional security checks and verification processes introduced for the re-examination.

The incident reignited a broader discussion about balancing strict examination discipline with exceptional circumstances faced by candidates. Supporters of the decision argued that punctuality is essential in national-level examinations and that making exceptions for a few candidates could compromise fairness for others who arrived on time. Others questioned whether a brief grace period should be considered in cases involving genuine difficulties.

Despite the controversy, the examination proceeded as scheduled across the country. Education experts noted that competitive entrance tests operate under strict timelines to maintain integrity and prevent malpractice. The Bengaluru incident serves as another reminder of the importance of following official instructions carefully and arriving early for high-stakes examinations, particularly when enhanced security measures are in place.
