Authorities Cut Internet in Five Manipur Districts After Protest over Two Children Killed

Internet cut in five Manipur districts after protests.

Internet and mobile data services have been suspended across five districts in Manipur amid widespread unrest triggered by the deaths of two young children in Bishnupur district. Authorities took the decision late Tuesday to prevent misinformation and curb escalating protests that followed the tragic incident.

The violent episode began in the Moirang Tronglaobi area of Bishnupur, where a suspected bomb or rocket attack struck a family home early on Tuesday, killing a five‑year‑old boy and his infant sister and injuring their mother. The attack occurred while the children and their mother were asleep, leading to shock and outrage among residents.

News of the children’s deaths sparked immediate and intense protests, with angry locals blocking roads, burning tyres, and setting fire to vehicles near the Moirang Police Station. Demonstrators demanded stronger security measures and swift action against those responsible for the attack.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the Manipur government ordered an immediate suspension of internet and mobile services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts for a period of three days. Officials said the move was aimed at maintaining law and order and stopping the spread of rumours on social media.

Security forces have been deployed across the region to manage the protests and prevent further violence. Law enforcement agencies are also investigating the exact cause and origin of the explosion, with preliminary reports pointing to suspected militant groups operating in the sensitive hill–valley region that has seen recurrent tensions.

The tragic deaths have underscored Manipur’s fragile security climate, where ethnic conflict and intermittent militant attacks have repeatedly disrupted peace in recent years. Local leaders and civil society figures have urged calm while calling for a thorough and transparent probe to bring the perpetrators to justice.
