Assam Government Launches Massive Ban on Radical Jihadi Content
State bans jihadi content linked to Bangladeshi terror groups.
The Assam government has imposed a sweeping ban on the publication, circulation, and possession of all forms of radical or jihadi literature linked to Bangladeshi terror organisations and similar extremist outfits. The prohibition applies to both physical and digital content and has been enforced under Section 98 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the interest of public safety and internal security.
The decision follows a detailed examination of intelligence inputs, cyber-patrolling reports, and investigations conducted by the Assam Police and its Special Task Force. The home department issued the order after reviewing communications from law enforcement agencies and obtaining the views of the judicial department on the growing security threat posed by such materials.
According to the order, extremist propaganda linked to groups such as Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), and Ansar-Al-Islam/pro-AQIS continues to circulate through publications, documents, and digital platforms. These organisations are already banned by the central government. Authorities stated that the content glorifies violent jihad, promotes radicalisation, and provides ideological indoctrination and operational guidance to potential recruits.

The government warned that the continued availability of such literature and digital propaganda makes vulnerable sections of youth susceptible to extremist influence. It clarified that the publication, distribution, exhibition, and possession of such material would attract offences under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Information Technology Act.
The order further authorised the Assam Police, Special Branch, Crime Investigation Department, district police heads, and cybercrime units to take strict legal action against violators. The move comes in the backdrop of several recent arrests linked to JMB and ABT networks, where individuals were allegedly involved in radicalising youth and spreading extremist ideology within the state.
