Assam Flood Death Toll Rises to 62, 7 Lakh People Affected

The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll rising to 62 after 14 more flood-related fatalities were reported, according to the latest Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) bulletin. More than 7.05 lakh people have been affected across 12 districts, while extensive flooding has submerged hundreds of villages and caused widespread damage to agriculture, infrastructure and livestock. Rescue and relief operations are continuing as authorities work to reach marooned communities.

According to the latest flood bulletin, 7,05,148 people have been affected across 856 villages under 37 revenue circles. The latest fatalities include seven deaths in Charaideo district, six in Sivasagar and one in Jorhat. Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district with 3,48,555 people impacted, followed by Charaideo with 1,88,404 and Jorhat with 1,26,793. Other affected districts include Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Kamrup (Metro) and Karbi Anglong.

Authorities have intensified relief efforts by establishing 363 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the affected districts. More than 1,15,205 people are currently taking shelter in relief camps, while relief assistance is being extended to over two lakh people through distribution centres. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration evacuated nearly 1,000 people from inundated areas on Friday.

Floodwaters continue to pose a serious threat as several rivers, including the Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri (South) and Kushiyara, remain above the danger level. The agricultural sector has suffered extensive losses, with 56,606.777 hectares of crop area still submerged. Livestock has also been severely affected, with 17,107 animals and poultry washed away in the last 24 hours, while a total of 3,34,020 animals and poultry continue to be impacted by the floods.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who visited a relief camp in Dergaon earlier this week, described the flood situation in parts of the state as "very, very pathetic" and "dangerous". He attributed the widespread flooding to exceptionally heavy rainfall in parts of Nagaland and Assam, particularly affecting Charaideo and Sivasagar districts. The Chief Minister said rescue and relief operations were continuing with support from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, NDRF and state agencies.

The Chief Minister also said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured support from the Centre and that a central team was scheduled to visit Assam to assess the extent of the damage. As floodwaters continue to affect thousands of families, authorities have pledged to maintain rescue operations, expand relief measures and reach isolated communities while closely monitoring river levels and weather conditions in the coming days.
