Assam Flood Crisis Escalates As Rescue Operations Continue Amid Widespread Destruction

The flood situation in Assam continued to remain severe as 10 more people, including four children, lost their lives in the last 24 hours due to rising waters across the state. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the latest fatalities have taken the total number of flood-related deaths in the state to 41 during the current wave of flooding. The ASDMA said three people died each in Sivasagar and Jorhat districts, while two deaths were reported from Charaideo district. Dhemaji and Karbi Anglong districts recorded one death each.

Authorities also confirmed that six people, including three men and three women, remain missing as rescue and relief operations continue in several affected areas. The flood situation has affected more than 6.53 lakh people across 11 districts of Assam, including Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Hojai and Kamrup Metropolitan. According to the latest ASDMA flood report, 939 villages under 40 revenue circles are still submerged, causing widespread disruption to daily life, transportation and access to essential services.

Continuous rainfall in Assam has led to rising water levels in the Brahmaputra river and several of its tributaries, worsening the situation in low-lying regions. Officials said the Disang river at Nanglamuraghat is flowing above the highest flood level, while multiple other rivers have crossed their danger marks at different locations. The water levels of the Burhidihing river at Chenimari in Khowang, the Dikhou river in Sivasagar, the Dhansiri (South) river at Numaligarh and the Kushiyara river at Sribhumi are flowing above the danger level, according to authorities.

The rising rivers have increased the risk of further flooding in vulnerable areas, prompting officials to remain alert and continue monitoring water levels. More than 3.13 lakh flood-affected residents have taken shelter in 487 relief camps and relief distribution centres established by district administrations. Government agencies, local authorities and disaster response teams are engaged in providing food, medical assistance and other essential supplies to displaced families.

With rainfall continuing in several parts of the state, authorities have warned that the flood situation may remain challenging in the coming days. Rescue teams are closely monitoring affected districts, while administration officials are coordinating relief measures to minimise the impact on communities facing one of Assam’s major flood crises of the year.
